Foodie Review #1

Was in Malacca early this morning with a friend to get some things done. Decided to head on over to The Daily Fix Cafe along Jonker Street for brunch.
Because we were both on a (very, very, very) tight budget (but still wanted to check it out) we ordered two breakfast meals and shared them.
First up we have the Pandan Pancakes with Gula Melaka.
The picture doesn't do it any justice, unfortunately.
The pancake itself was soft and fluffy and had just the right amount of pandan flavour of which we caught wafts as it was served. Was pleasantly surprised as I cut into it and found the brown sugar filling. The pancakes absorbed the brown sugar syrup so occasionally I bit into chunks of brown sugar. The coconut on the side made it that much richer and the vanilla ice-cream sort of brought it all together. Perfect if you're looking to try something different with local flavours.
Then we had the Eggs Benedict. This was a bit of a tease because the bacon looked so bloody good, what with all that sauce dripping over the perfectly poached egg, but the actual taste of the whole dish was only brought together by the little slice of aubergine in the very middle.
The ciabatta, which was the base of the dish, wasn't as crispy as I'd have liked, but was satisfying nonetheless. I think they added some thyme to it (?). Then there was the salad which had the wonderful slices of bacon on top. On that, a roasted slice of tomato. And on that slice sat the miniature slice of roasted aubergine which was hidden under the poached egg. The hollandaise was very creamy but the butter in it was very obvious (in taste and sight) and this - aside from the butter that was spread - is what soaked the ciabatta which, I think, made it not have the crunch I was initially expecting. All the elements by themselves were rather bland except for the bacon. But when I had a bite of everything together - the ciabatta, tomato, aubergine, bacon and egg - it was so, so good. That tiny slice of aubergine is what tied the whole dish together for me.
The salad on the side had a sesame oil dressing which wasn't too bad.
Portions were pretty alright, and for the quality of food that was served I think the prices for the food on the menu were rather fitting. Can't say the same about the prices of the drinks, though.
Service was really good. Staff were accommodating, attentive and friendly.
Will definitely be going back to try out their cakes (the carrot cake looked absolutely divine) and other savoury dishes.
Cheers to the weekend! ;)

It's Dr., Now!

It's been 10 days since my final professional exam & announcement of my results. I'm a doctor. & though I've been studying my entire life to reach this stage it still feels so surreal. It still feels like I need to head back south to continue with classes. Like I'm still on some semester break that is going to come to an end. Every so often throughout my day it hits me; I don't have to study anymore - for now at least. But then this though gets clouded over by other things & I forget. I have to constantly keep reminding myself that I've made it. I've actually, finally made it this far. As daunting as this whole new chapter - that's about to begin - is, part of me is excited to start. I'm excited to see where my future takes me, not only in which field of medicine I decide to pursue but also to which place. Big cities are out of the question for me. I realized, over the past couple of days, that since I've left th...

Dubai

Dubai was actually a layover. Since I have friends there I decided to spend a few days with them before flying out to London.  I took Emirates to and from Dubai & the UK & it was great. The unlimited wine was a major plus :P Only spent about 3 days in Dubai so I saw only a few of the major must-see spots.  My friend picked me up from the airport & we went to her place first. It was about 20 minutes away. More depending on traffic. Roads are very broad and each side has 6 lanes with a minimum of 3 on average. You see a lot of SUVs there. There's a lot of American influence. The UAE doesn't have their own national car.  It felt a lot like being in KL at first. Only after a while I started taking in the difference. Plenty of skyscrapers everywhere. But unlike KL, buildings here are built much closer together. & there is a LOT of development going on, still.  After washing up at home, we headed out to the Burj. The entrance is within th...

So! I have to admit it's been a really long while since my last entry. I was working on my food blog, briefly. Then in between life happened & I haven't updated it yet but fret not! I will soon. I just got back from my trip overseas & since I took plenty of pictures I thought I'd share them & blog about the places I visited. Will be starting with Dubai. Then Germany. Then London/UK. Watch this space :)
